Broken Puppy

Lani with her leg in a cast

L for Lani

This morning at 6:30 a.m. Lani was dropped accidentally from my husband’s arms and fell four and a half feet to the floor where she broke her leg. She broke through all four “toe” bones in the lower half of her leg. We rushed her to the emergency vet office in Virginia Beach (If you live in the area and ever need, we’ve been there twice now and they are fantastic: http://www.animalcriticalcaretdwtr.com/). You all know I’m on a very tight budget so you’ll no doubt be wondering how I paid for the bill. We were informed about this thing called Care Credit which we applied for and were given a good credit line from. We used it to pay for her $502 bill and will be using it to do the rest of her checkups till she’s all better.

By the time we got to the hospital, Lani already wanted to get out of my arms are try to run around. She didn’t seem very phased after she had calmed down. But we handed her off to a nurse and began the waiting game. When we finally saw the doctor she said that Lani had broken through all four bones and that she’d never seen a dog do that. She prepared us for the worst (orthopedic surgeon, fusing it all together if healed improperly, amputation) and then set off to fix my puppy. We left the hospital as it would take many hours.

Since we were nearby we stopped at Walmart and spent $100 on things to clean the house and rid it of fleas (cross your fingers). I’ll be dusting the house and spraying tomorrow morning while the dogs play outside (well the other dogs). I’m really hoping it gets rid of these bastards. — Then we made our way home and began the waiting. We filled it with video games and food and tv. So I was able to be distracted but the whole time I was thinking, “please let her be able to line them all up well.”

And guess what? She did! We left the house round 2:30 p.m. and when we saw the doctor she said she was very happy to report that she was able to get all the bones very close together and that she thinks Lani may be able to heal back perfectly fine with a full range of motion if all goes well.  So everyone send your good vibrations (and prayers) her way.

Awww, poor baby. I’m glad that she’s going to be fine. I think I would freak out if something happened to our pups, but I am so glad that she is doing okay. Keep us updated.
